So I Invented Something – What Do I Do Now?

One of the most common things we hear when new inventors call our office is “what is my next step?”  You’ve done all this work to make your invention something great and now getting a patent can seem like a daunting task.

Once your invention is ready, you should spend some time to figure out what exactly you want to do with it:

  • Is this an item that you want to market yourself?
  • Is this something that you would want to license to others for them to market?
  • What do you wish to gain from your invention?

These are very important questions that you should answer before beginning the patent process.

The next step you should take is to contact a reliable patent attorney.  A patent attorney can walk you through the entire patent process; from a patentability search and patentability opinion, to drafting the different sections of the application, to what happens if you get an office action.  An attorney can explain what you need to protect, why you need to protect it, and how to protect it.
